Thinking Outside the Box Maths Project Week

Last week, all of the maths classes, from Year 3 through to Year 8, paused their normal lesson programme and instead focused for the whole week on our annual Thinking Outside the Box maths project week.
This year, we challenged the children to research and plan a four-week summer vacation for themselves and a small group of friends that would involve travelling all around Europe, visiting as many countries as possible, on a very tight budget. Their final presentations needed to include a detailed timeline, an accumulative record of the distances they covered, and a breakdown of how they managed their limited funds and covered all their expenses. This complicated and stretching project was a lot of fun, and the children produced some outstanding final presentations. It was a wonderful way for them to appreciate the real-world applications of all the concepts and skills that they have been working so hard on in their maths lessons throughout the term.
