Art Scholars Trip to Hauser & Wirth Gallery

Upper School art scholars enjoyed a trip to Hauser & Wirth in Bruton on 5 December. The fifteen Year 7 and 8 pupils viewed an inspiring exhibition of the work of British artist and Royal Academician, Phyllida Barlow.
During her career, Barlow took inspiration from her surroundings to create imposing installations. These constructions are often painted in vibrant colours, and the means of their construction are left visible, revealing their inexpensive, industrial materials: cardboard, fabric, plywood, polystyrene, scrim, and cement. Led by educational guide Mark, the tour around the gallery involved practical workshop activities which encouraged pupils to discuss and think about the qualities of materials in relation to sculpture and making. Once back in the education hub, they enjoyed group construction activities which relied on teamwork and communication. All pupils enjoyed their visit to this excellent local gallery, and we look forward to visiting again in the future.
